The cottage is at the gateway of the central and best
preserved section of the Roman Wall.
Should
you wish to find out more about Roman life on the Wall, the
Roman
Army
Museum
is the local site only 5 minutes away.
Enjoy rural Northumberland –
England
’s “best kept secret”. The
Northumberland
National Park
starts just a few miles to the north of us, and continues up to the
Cheviot range of hills and the Scottish Border.
Kielder,
Europe
’s largest man-made forest, with its lake and a variety of outdoor
pursuits and leisure attractions, is a pleasant drive up the
North Tyne
valley. With its sparse population, its unspoilt coastline, unpolluted
rivers and miles of rolling countryside, our area is perfect for enjoying
a range of outdoor activities. Stanegate
Cottage offers the best of walking right on the doorstep.
Greenhead village, down the hill from the cottage has a welcoming pub for
a good meal and a well earned drink after a hard day’s walking.
Our “local castle”
Thirlwall
Castle
,
is
a 14th century stronghold , built of stone stolen from the
Roman Wall. Call in at the excellent Tea room at the farm next to the
Castle for tea and home made cakes.
Haltwhistle
Golf Club is literally feet away from us (the cottage looks out over
it). There are also fine
courses at Hexham and
Brampton
.
Talkin
Tarn
, near
Brampton
, is a local beauty spot for an easy stroll, fishing, boating or a picnic.
Stanegate Cottage is situated in a perfect place as a base for visiting
the beautiful coastline with
Holy Island
and
Bamburgh
Castle
, the
Lake District
and even the Scottish Borders. All
in all, great for a relaxing or energetic holiday.
If you prefer to use public transport, the towns and
cities of the
Tyne
Valley
and north
Cumbria
can be reached by taking advantage of the bus
which can be caught a few minutes away from the cottage.
The railway station at Haltwhistle is only 3 miles away for regular
services to
Newcastle
and
Carlisle
.
